Strength Training For Seniors - Choosing the Correct Weights For Best Results
Once you cross age of 50 you may lose about one pound of muscle every passing year. To counteract this process strength training is the answer. For carrying strength training at home you need to buy some dumbbells or hand weights.
Hand weights are of three types:
- Iron - These are weights of gray metal that you might have come across. They are reasonably priced and may rust over a period of time. They may dent or scratch the floor if dropped down.
- Covered Iron - These are rubber or vinyl coated iron weight. They are rust-free, less likely to produce scratch on the floor but may dent it. Obviously they are more expensive.
- Rubber - These weights have metal handle but the weight parts are totally rubber. Neither they scratch your floor nor do they produce dent in it. Even if dropped down they bounce back harmlessly. They are the most expensive of the three.
When selecting the type of weights for your exercise it is better to keep in mind the place where you are going to exercise normally. If you are concerned about the floor of your home then at least go for coated dumbbells. Local sporting store in your city will have all three types of dumbbells.
New weights are priced around $1 to $2 per pound of weight. Buying two 3 pound dumbbells would cost about $6 to $12 that is not at all a big amount if their use and benefit for your health are considered in long run.
You can physically check the dumbbells for your need, the best way to do that is reach your local sports stores and try different weights and select the one with which you can do 12 to 15 reps safely.
Dumbbells are an easy and effective way to slow down muscle loss that is associated with aging. They help you in strength training. Just get a word from your doctor before you start and don't get too much excited to lift a weight that is more than you can handle.
